Title- Digital Pollination (mertensian mimicry)
(Pen/ink and watercolor)

Technology’s beauty, constant evolution and reproduction combined with mankind’s fascination of its capabilities has, in a sense, pollinated and changed the human mind. Its insidious power and our naivety to any real threat it may possess, has made us susceptible to a gradual digital takeover, for better and worse. Growing up in the 80s and 90s in a time when being outdoors catching random creatures and getting poison ivy was the norm, I was able to see and experience the birth and growth of modern technologies that keep the younger generations of our species indoors, hypnotizing, pollenating and poisoning a part the human condition. This piece was created with that role reversal in mind, juxtaposing the metaphorical imagery of the digital-winged butterfly with the circuit board designs and brain. The bloom of the flower subtly grounds the subject while leaves of poison ivy sprout. The final piece of this project was to construct a frame out of circuit boards that surround the artwork to enhance the notion of technology’s all-encompassing capabilities.
